Complacency is a Choice: 5 Ways to Keep Your Momentum

"To stay competitive in a dynamic business world, I invite my clients to keep their momentum moving forward - Even small steps forward are steps." Kari Ellis

As a recruiter, my team at WayPoint Consulting Partners and I are usually the ones asking the questions and screening seasoned candidates for our clients across the country in the Financial Services field. However, I recently had the opportunity to take a seat on the show, Financial Freedom with Tom Hegna. This interview aired on CNBC in partnership with Spotlight Digital Network and you can watch it HERE. This experience wasn’t just an opportunity to share valuable insights—it was a powerful reminder of what it feels like to sit on the "other side of the desk." I often tell my clients that complacency is a choice, and I stand by that belief. I never ask my clients to do anything I’m not willing to do myself. Appearing on this interview pushed me in ways I hadn’t anticipated, challenging me to grow and embrace new perspectives.

As someone who regularly guides career seekers through the interview process, my tv interview experience reinforced the importance of consistently sharpening skills—not just for job interviews, but for any scenario that requires self-presentation, from podcasts to promotions. From managing nerves to preparing to offer others solid information and data points related to the financial services field, this TV interview challenged me to reflect on (and continue sharing with my network) the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone.

Albert Einstein once said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change." When we challenge ourselves to stay on the cusp of change, we're doing ourselves a service—and our future selves will undoubtedly appreciate it. Whether you're networking, preparing for an interview of any type, or seeking new career opportunities, staying proactive and sharp is crucial. The experience I recently had served as a powerful reminder of the importance of avoiding complacency. It pushed me to reflect on five key lessons that can help keep us adaptable, focused, and ready for what’s next. Avoiding complacency means actively seeking new challenges and constantly evolving to stay ahead.

Avoid Complacency | 5 Ways

  • Practice Active Networking: Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Engage with your network regularly, whether it’s by attending events, reaching out for check-ins, or offering value to others. It keeps your connections alive and your skills relevant.

  • Seek Feedback: Whether it’s a mock interview or a feedback session after a corporate presentation, constantly seek ways to improve your communication and self-presentation. You can never perfect your approach unless you know where you can improve.

  • Push Beyond the Familiar: Take on projects or roles that challenge you. Step outside your comfort zone, whether it’s speaking at a new type of event, applying for a job that you feel you don't meet 100% of the qualifications for, or pursuing a new skill in business (or life). This allows you to grow and adapt to changing demands.

  • Leverage Personal Branding: Keep your online presence, especially on LinkedIn, up to date. Showcase your latest achievements, skills, and thoughts in your field. Being visible is as important as being qualified. Demonstrate why you deserve a seat at the table.

  • Embrace Lifelong Learning: Don’t stop evolving. Whether it’s taking courses, attending webinars, or reading up on the latest trends in your industry, staying informed will help you stay ahead of the curve.

📌 BLOG CONCLUSION: The key to staying competitive is making sure your skills are always sharp and ready for whatever comes next—whether it’s an interview, promotion, or new career opportunity.
